Samsung Gauss, a Generative AI Model to Feature on Galaxy Phones
Samsung will be launching its generative AI model, called Samsung Gauss. Samsung Electronics unveiled it on Wednesday, just one day ago, on the second day of the Samsung AI Forum 2023 at its R&D center in Seoul. Samsung Research, led by the event, focuses on generative AI.
Samsung Gauss is said to be incorporated into the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in the first half of 2024. The move is part of the generative AI race that is rising currently in the IT global industry. Daehyun Kim, Executive Vice President of the Samsung Research Global AI Center, said they will continue to support and collaborate with industry and academia on generative AI research.
Two researchers from OpenAI also attended the forum. One of them is Dr. Hyung Won Chung, who explains the operation of large language models (LLMs). Another researcher, Jason Wei, talked about how LLMs will cause a shift in AI.
Samsung said that Gaus is named after Carl Friedrich Gauss, known as the greatest mathematician of all time. “Furthermore, the name reflects Samsung’s ultimate vision for the models, which is to draw from all the phenomena and knowledge in the world in order to harness the power of AI to improve the lives of consumers everywhere,” said Samsung.
The model consists of Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code and Samsung Gauss Image, serving different functions. Just like other generative AI technologies, they improve and boost work efficiency, which also saves so much time.
Samsung Gauss Language helps with tasks such as composing emails, summarizing longer paragraphs for documents, checking grammar errors and translating contents. Enabling smarter device control that integrates with products will boost the customer experience.
Samsung Gauss code and a coding assistant are beneficial for developers to quickly write code with ease. With an interactive interface, functions such as code description and test case generation are available.
Meanwhile, Samsung Gauss Image is designed to generate images that can be edited, applying various styles and also converting lower-resolution images to high-quality images.
While the AI model is currently being used internally, it will be available to the public in the future, potentially in smartphones such as the Galaxy S24 series. Not only that, they are also developing safe AI usage for users and strengthening security and privacy issues with the help of the AI Red Team.
